Special Olympics NV
Population Served:
Athletes may participate in sports practices or our other programs as young as the age of six years old. Athletes must be eight years old to participate in sporting competitions. There is no “upper” age limit.
Special Olympics Nevada provides inclusive programs and opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities in the areas of sports, education, health, and leadership development. Our program participants (i.e., athletes) learn skills that build their confidence and self-esteem, making them valuable members of their community. Our “Unified” approach in our programs engages both people with and without disabilities in activities together, allowing us to elevate the abilities of those who are differently abled. Special Olympics Nevada’s work is helping to establish our region as a Leader in inclusive services.

Mission Statement:
The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. This gives them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendships with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.
Offerings:
Sports offered are basketball, bocce, bowling, flag football, swimming, track & field. There has been golf in the past, too.
Participate:
An athlete needs to enroll on the Special Olympics website. To participate, a physical is required, which must be renewed every 3 years. Once enrolled, the athlete registers for programs on the website.
